Things lost and stolen: when family heirlooms go missing. What do you do?

In this episode of Eldercare Success, I tackle a common, yet overlooked, caregiving obstacle: the loss of family treasures. Whether it's an antique, jewelry, or a sentimental photo, these items often disappear. They can be accidentally misplaced and never found again, stolen, or taken by an antique dealer offering to pay cash for them – this was what happened in our case.  Either way, the loss of a family treasure, can leave you angry, distraught, or frustrated in not understanding why, or how such a thing could happen.  It should however prompt crucial questions.

If an aging parent is caught in this type of situation, what do you do?  Do you call the police, or care facility authorities? Confront suspicious members? Or take a different approach?

This episode delves into the often-underestimated emotional impact of such losses, highlighting their role as potential red flags in our loved one's safety. It's more than a missing item; it's a signal you should take it seriously, and probe deeper into learning if your parents are truly safe on their own, or in their current living environment.

Despite all this, there's a silver lining: resilience. It’s important to remember that true wealth isn't in possessions but in cherished memories and experiences - no matter how stressful or depressing the loss of family treasure is.

There are additional tips and recommendations for all caregivers and families on how to manage this type of situation well.  Caring for an aging, or elderly parent isn’t for sissies!

Stay informed, stay strong. Keep following Eldercare Success.
